Footsteps to Greening my hair salon

1)  Start an Employee Garden

Since starting the journey to create a "Green" salon, I've struggled with the urban agriculture movement.
Urban agriculture has become a very popular tool for creating a sustainable environment.  Because I was interested in urban agriculture, I've visited a few organic farms.  However, I was not certain that urban agriculture made sense in every environment.  That is; until I visited the Growing Power farm (growingpower.org) located in Wisconsin. During that short trip, I learned that Farming is:
  • a great tool for encouraging better nutrition
  • helps to understand the dynamics of the land
  • easy to learn--that is; if you are willing to give it a good try!
Also, I learned that research has shown that people who connect with the earth tend to be less stressed out

When I returned from my trip, I became so inspired that I shared my enthusiasm with my staff.

Today, we've officially started an employee garden at Octavia's Natural Hair Care Experience salon http://www.imadeulooksalon.com/ In addition to our salon duties, we are farming the land too.  As a reward, we will eat our food at work and share our food with our families.  And even better, we are learning a new skill set that translates into creating food (and even wealth) for our families.
